Description
The ArCHIAM Research Center, situated near the historic Nizwa Fort, aims to integrate with its surroundings by elevating its structure, thereby allowing for visual connections and permeability. Its shifted brick façade softens boundaries between old and new, creating a dialogue between the heavy brick and light glass elements. A plaza connects the fort and the center, offering visitors a space to appreciate the landmark. The program is divided into public and private zones, with a courtyard hosting exhibitions and workshops. A timber roofing system unites both areas, blending old and new. Rehabilitation strategies include preservation, like adding perforated metal stairs to the abandoned tower for circulation. As well adaptive reuse, where deteriorated buildings are retrofitted with new interiors while retaining their historic facades. Lastly, translation involves applying vernacular architectural elements in modern ways. These strategies ensure the site’s historical integrity while introducing contemporary functionality, reviving the old through the new without overpowering it, and ensuring an enduring and explorative experience for all.
